The thing about watching over a body in the night— even though there are plenty of things to remember, one being to avoid the duty if you possibly can—is to remember that sometimes the corpse will stiffen as it cools, so not to be scared if you hear something moving. Gases will escape, the smells and the breeze might make the candle flicker, but don’t be frightened. Just keep the candle lit, and when the sun comes up it will be all over.
It was very difficult to remember this when the corpse was lying in its coffin on the table. Robert shifted a little, looking up from the fat wax stick Salt and Earth
